Boot Scrubbing Buddy

Make wiping your feet fun -- and stop dirt and mud in their tracks this summer -- with this friendly-faced shoe cleaner.

1. To make one, first use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on a 16-inch lenght of 1x8-inch wooden board. Use a pencil to sketch a basic hedgehog shape on the board, (or any other animal you would like *S*) then paint your design with acrylic paints. You might first sketch a simple oval shape with a point at one end for a nose. then paint the area around the shape green, then us tan for the hedgehog's face and body, adding strokes of brown for the critter's outline fur, eyebrows, and feet. Finally, paint on 3 black circles for the nose and eyes, adding a small dot of white paint to each eye for a highlight. When the paints have dried, add a coat of polyurethane sealer and allow it to dry.

2. Use wood glue to attach two 5-inch lengths of 1x2-inch board to the backs of 2 of 3 rectangular wooden scrub brushes.

3. Glue the brushes to the board with the lower one in the middle, as shown.

4. Turn over the board and use a drill and a 1/16th inch bit to make 2 pilot holes through the board and into each brush. Secure each brush in place with 2 #6 flathead wood screws. (Make sure the screws are long enough to sink into the wood of the brushes without poking through into the bristles.) If you like, attach a piece of a nonskid rug pad to the back of the board to keep it from slippin when in use.
