The Granny Square

With this square you can make all sorts of things. From afgans to jackets to pot holders. Make them any size you want just by adding more rows.

For this project, I am going to use three colors.. White, lt. blue and dk. blue. Just for an example. Use whatever colors suits you best. *S*

To start.. Chain 5 with white and join in first stitch.

Row 1: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet),2 double crochets in ring. Chain 2. * 3 double crochet. Chain 2. Repeat from * twice. Join in third stitch on Chain 3. (you should have four sets of 3 double crochets in the ring). Bind off.

Row 2: Attach lt. blue in corner (Chain 2 space). Chain 3. 2 double crochets in same space. Chain 2. 3 Double crochets in same space. Chain 1. * 3 double crochets in chain 2 space. Chain 2. 3 double crochets in same space. Chain 1. Repeat from * twice. Join in third stitch on Chain 3. Bind off.

(Now you should show your square coming together)...

Row 3: Attach dk. blue in corner (Chain 2 space). Chain 3. 2 double crochets in same space. Chain 2. 3 Double crochets in same space. Chain 1. * 3 double crochets in next chain 1 space. Chain 1. * 3 double crochets in chain 2 space. Chain 2. 3 double crochets in same space. Repeat from * twice. Join in third stitch on Chain 3. Bind off.

Now you have three rows. You can add more rows by just following Row 3 to make the squares the size you want them. When you have them the right size, just sew them together to make whatever project you want to make. Two large Granny Squares sewed back to back make great pot holders. *S*
