• Potatoes soaked in salt water for 20 minutes before baking will bake more rapidly. (Not for the salt-free diet).


  • Freeze fresh onions about 20 minutes before peeling, slicing or dicing to help prevent tears!


  • Sweet potatoes will remain bright if placed in salted water when peeling for cooking. Drain, rinse and cook.


  • French fries wil be crispier if raw potatoes stand in cold water for at least 30 minutes before frying.


  • A few drops of lemon juice in the water will whiten boiled potatoes.


  • Use greased muffin tins as molds when baking stuffed peppers.


  • Use a strawberry huller to peel potatoes boiled in their jackets.


  • The skins will remain tender if you wrap baked potatoes in foil before baking in regular oven; or after baking, if using microwave.


  • Add a little milk to the water in which cauliflower is cooked to retain its attractive whiteness.


  • When cooking cabbage, place a small pan with 1/2 cup vinegar on the stove near the cabbage, and it will absorb the odor of the cabbage.
